Every autumn, we try to go out in the woods and hunt for mushrooms, usually tract chantarelles which are easy to identify and are very good in pies. Sometimes, we also spot golden chantarelles. Last autumn, we went for a day trip to Sweden to go mushroom picking. Coincidentally, the town of Årjäng was also holding its annual market. We checked out the booths and enjoyed some churros.

We’ve been to Årjäng several times in the past, but the market was something new. Carl said that markets and bazaars are a very Swedish thing to do in summer. So here we go:

Årjäng Market is held on the 3rd weekend of September every year. It’s a tradition that has been going on for many years, since the 1600s. About 700 stalls are scattered in the vicinity, selling food, merchandise, clothes, toys, among others. There’s also the traditional kålsoppa or cabbage soup and klengås or cake with butter and grated cheese.

Last year, it was held from 15-17 of September. Throngs of people flooded the market. Children also enjoyed the tivoli rides, while the adults soaked themselves in the sun with cold drinks.

I like going to markets, even if I don’t usually buy anything. 🙂

After the market, we tried our luck and looked for mushrooms in the forests of Värmland. We didn’t find a lot of tract chantarelles, but spotted some of the golden ones, enough for a couple of sandwiches. I’m not sure if the mushroom on the first pic below is edible 🙂

We were sure to try our luck again the following weekend. Mushroom-picking is a perfect outdoor activity in autumn. And on the way home, a rainbow appeared!

This is all for now. I still have a lot of traveling memories to blog about. Cheers!
