Another fun, yet quick Geocaching tour on the way to Sweden last April. This time, in the cozy town of Askim in the Østfold region, eastern Norway. Askim became a city in 1996, and has a population of around 14,600 (2022). Although it’s fairly new as a city, it was a former municipality (or kommune) founded way back in the 1800s. It was our second, yet again, spontaneous visit. We were on our way to shopping in Töcksfors, Sweden and we needed a quick stretch!

Last time we were in Askim, we visited the Solbergfoss Hydroelectric Power Station: https://pinayodyssey.com/2022/04/15/roadtrip-21-visiting-solbergfoss-hydroelectric-power-station-en-route-for-tocksfors-shopping-center-in-sweden/.

Here, you’ll find a nice video presentation of Askim: https://www.askim.no/askimbyen/. It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there by car. As the trip happened in early April, many parts were still covered in ice. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and lots of birds with high pitched tweets!

Askim is a major producer of hydroelectricity, with three dams or powerplants operating in the river Glomma, one of which was Solbergfoss. We parked by the train station and walked our way through the main square and downtown. For sure, we didn’t see much; it was more like a glimpse or a taste of the city. Several people were out that day, enjoying the sunshine.

We found 3 geocaches – hurray! Then, we moved on to Sweden. We had some Swedish pizza and kebab in the shopping center. We usually buy grocery in Sweden, but lately, it has also been expensive to shop there. The economy is tough these days.

It was nice to get to know more of Askim. I still don’t know how to pronounce it properly though. 🙂
