NORWAY: Elvefestivalen – Drammen’s biggest festival of the year!

Drammen is a beautiful river city in the Buskerud region. Drammensere love their city so much that in summer, during the first weekend after school starts, they celebrate the biggest festival of the year – the Elvefestivalen. Elv  is the Norwegian word for river, with the name of the festival referring to the 308 km Drammenselva, the fifth longest river in Norway. Even Carl and I are in love with Drammenselva, yes, we enjoy grilling and sunbathing there in summer and taking long walks during weekends in all four seasons. Last summer, we went to Elvefestivalen to celebrate with other Drammensere, and boy, was it a huge event starting up from the Ypsilon Bridge down to Bragernes Square!

The festival was first held in 1995 by JC Drammen in an effort to celebrate that the river was cleaned and restored. Later one, the goal changed to promoting the city and making Drammen more visible outside the city borders and nearby towns. Over the years, about 120-150 000 people visited the city during the weekend festival. Concerts, an amusement park, exhibitions and other entertainment activities were set up. There were also water activities like cruises and boat races. The city transforms with live music and happier people!

There were free entertainment and some with entrance fees. For example, last year, they had put up a huge tent to hold a concert of famous local and international artists like Eva & the Heartmaker, Frøder, CC Cowboys, Gundelach, Timbuktu & Damn, Dumdum Boys, Marit Larsen, Kristian Kristensen, Violet Road, Skinny Days, Aurora, Dagny and Veronica Maggio.

Well, if Elvefestivalen was held in the Philippines, I’m sure people will talk to one another because they know everybody! But here, it was just me and my husband, and boy, was it nice. haha We enjoyed some beer and cider from Aass Bryggeri in Drammen, the oldest brewery in Norway.

I can’t wait for the Elvefestivalen this summer. I’m sure it’s going to be a major event once again! For more info, click here.

This is all for now! Cheers to more festivals and good times! #spreadlove
